FAQs

Is a boiler leaking an emergency?

It could be considered an emergency if water is dripping from the boiler. Any damage to your appliance caused by water can make it irreparable. Gas leaking from your boiler should always be treated as an emergency.

How can I tell if there is a gas leak?

To identify if there is a gas leak in the home, there are several signs that you can look for. First, you might smell sulphur, which smells similar to rotten eggs, or that familiar gas smell. Gas can be detected when the boiler is heating up. However, if it persists for a long time it could indicate a leak.
Another sign of a leak is a damaged gas pipe, water bubbles, a hissing sound or whistling near a line and a dust cloud or white cloud close to a line. You may be able to identify a gas leak if you pay attention to your gas bills.

Do I have to hire an emergency plumber before I attempt to fix the problem myself?

Both yes and no. You can make smaller repairs yourself if you have the right tools and materials. These include plumbing for new appliances, fixing sink and toilet blockages, repairing or replacing taps, and installing new showerheads and plugs.

Professionals should handle any other repairs. They will perform a better repair and will be covered by insurance.

Is it worth purchasing home-emergency coverage?

As a homeowner, this is an important decision. As a guideline, if your home has new plumbing, pipes, bathrooms suites, toilets, boiler, etc., it should be able to last a reasonable amount of time before they need repair.

You may find that it is worth the cost of insurance if you live in an older home or are not sure if/when maintenance was done (e.g. a boiler service). Many people find that knowing they have insurance takes away the stress of an emergency.

Why am I required to pay a call-out fee for an emergency plumber?

The core hours that a plumber works are usually Monday through Friday from 8.30 am to 4.30 pm. To ensure they are able to work without worry, your plumber will have made sure that all their commitments and arrangements can be accommodated around these hours. The emergency plumber doesn’t need this arrangement. They can be reached at any hour of the day or night, on any day of the year.

The callout fee is partially to cover the inconvenience caused by your plumber not being available, so that they can make arrangements, etc. A second reason to charge a callout fee is to pay for transportation costs. Not all emergency plumbers are available in your area, so it may take them a long time to get to you. Callout charges will allow him to recover some of the petrol money and the travel time.
